Committee Purpose

Each parish in the diocese is to have a parish council or an advisory committee according to Canon Law 536, 1-2. Paragraph 2 "This pastoral council possesses a consultative vote only and is governed by norms determined by the diocesan bishop."

To foster the full pastoral life and growth of the parish. The council follows a model of ecclesial rather than political power. Thus it seeks to avoid a mentality of power plays, self centered strategies, and facionalisms. A pastoral council does not make church law (and is not, therfore, a lesgislative body), but discerns the application of given Church law and pastoral vision to the particular parish situation. The parish council or Advisory committee focuses on the building of concensus in the power of the Spirit, it operates by a careful and respectful process of listening and consultation.
